DIANA BRITO
DO RIO

This upcoming July 22 in the evening, after attending a welcoming ceremony at the Palacio Guanabara in Rio, nuns will greet Pope Francis with cheese bread, corn soufflé and Brazilian fruits such as papaya and mango.

The reception will be at the official residence of the Archdiocese of Rio, at the high point of the Sumaré road, at the Rio Comprido, at the North Area of Rio.

He will be staying there during the World Youth Day, an international meeting of young Catholics to be held between July 23 and 28 in the city.

The Pontiff did not want the glamour of chefs and asked only for simplicity at the table, "with no restrictions." A week before the visit, the menu was not yet fully closed. In what is known the Pope will have a Brazilian style barbecue served in one of three lunches at home. In another, rice, beans, cassava flour and filet mignon rolls.

At dinner, something lighter, like vegetable soup. The wine to be served is Salton Talento 2007. But fruit juices will also be offered.

Responsible for the kitchen, Sister Terezinha Fernandez, 46, has been at Sumaré for 25 years. She gets emotional when remembering she already cooked for Pope John Paul II in 1997 and will now serve the Pope Francis in person.

"Pope John Paul II was so pleased with our papaya that he asked that in all meals. Now we expect Pope Francis with joy and wait to see what he will like best in Brazil. My anxiety is greater than me," she said to Folha.

At the Pope's request, the household accessories and tableware will be simple. The cutlery, for example, are made of steel with the symbol of the Archdiocese of Rio

"It will be all very nice, but simple. No silver, no gold, just like the way Pope Francis wants it," says the nun.
