PAULO PEIXOTO
FROM VARGINHA

The most famous "resident" of the city of Varginha, in southern Minas Gerais, won a presidential commendation during a visit held yesterday. In a radio interview from the city, President Dilma Rousseff stated that she had "great respect" for the "E.T. of Varginha", an extra terrestrial that was supposedly captured in 1996 by the military in the city. The incident is famous throughout the country but has yet to be explained.

"I wanted to say that I have much respect for the E.T. of Varginha. And I know that here are some who have never seen it but know someone who has or have someone in the family who saw it, but either way I start by saying that this respect for the Varginha's E.T. is guaranteed" the president declared.

The statements were in response to a question asked of Dilma during an interview about coffee production, a tradition in the southern region of Minas. The question cited the notoriety that Varginha has achieved in Brazil, driven by the case of the alleged extraterrestrial's appearance 17 years ago.

APPEARANCE

The purported "E.T. of Varginha" was seen in January of 1996 by three girls from the city. Ufologists investigating the case said they had recordings of testimonies from soldiers who claim they had captured two E.T.s.

The beings had been captured and taken to the Brazilian city of Campinas (93 km from São Paulo) for an autopsy. At the time, the Army and the Fire Department denied knowledge of any seizure of that nature.

Statues and monuments were erected in Varginha in reference to the case with the major one being a water-tank shaped like a spaceship.
