LEANDRO COLON
SPECIAL ENVOY TO DOHA
President Dilma Rousseff, a special guest of the royal family of Qatar, was given a good welcome: on Tuesday (11) she slept in a US$ 11,700 suite.
According to the hotel, Rousseff will stay in one of the two presidential suites of 700 m² distributed over two floors and views of the Arabian Gulf.
The President and her entourage of 16 have been accommodated at the Hotel St. Régis, one of the most luxurious five-star and award-winning hotels in Doha, Qatar's capital.
According to the President's advisers, all the expenses were payed by local authorities. Rousseff was invited to spend the night in the city before heading to the G20 meeting in Australia.
On Wednesday (12), she meets the emir of Qatar, Tamin Bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The country has the world's highest income per capita, but faces criticism of poor labour conditions for workers on its modern construction sites and has little popular participation in its political system.
In the Emirate, 15 of the 45 members of the National Assembly are appointed directly by the emir and the other 30 are elected by vote.
The election was set for 2013, but it was indefinitely suspended after the abdication of Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani in favour of his son.
