Lula Sues São Paulo-Based Prosecutor and Demands US$ 313,000 in Damages

FROM SÃO PAULO

The lawyers of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said they filed a lawsuit on Thursday (the 12th) against Cassio Conserino, a prosecutor at the Public Ministry in São Paulo, for moral damages.

The former president is suing for R$ 1 million (US$ 313 thousand). Alongside two of his colleagues, the prosecutor charged Lula with concealment of equity and ideological falsehood regarding a beachfront apartment in Guarujá (São Paulo), and requested pre-trial detention.

Lula's lawyers claim Conserino tried to stain the former president's integrity.

They bring up the fact that the prosecutor abandoned the entire suit after a court ruling determined that the part of the suit concerning Lula would be under the jurisdiction of judge Sergio Moro, in the state of Paraná. Lula's lawyers also claim that the prosecutor called the former president an "enchanter of the ignorant".

The prosecutor, who was approached by the press, issued a statement through the Public Ministry's press office, saying he is waiting to be notified.
