Miguel, Arthur and Alice Are the Most Popular Names in Brazil in 2017

Miguel was the most registered baby name in Brazil, in 2017. The name was given to 25,710 children, according to the National Association of Natural Persons Registries (Associação Nacional dos Registradores de Pessoas Naturais - Arpen).

The calculation was based on data from more than 5,000 registry offices in 16 States. This year, the calculation method differentiates simple names from compound names and their variations.

The ranking shows, after Miguel, Arthur (21,161) and Alice (18,508), the most popular girl name. Traditional names such as João and Maria are still the most popular choices for compound names.

Maria Eduarda was the most common compound name among girls, with 9,922 registrations. João Miguel was the top baby boy name, registered 10,343 times.

A total of more than 40,000 different names were registered this year for children.
