There is still a month before calculating the official statistics on violence, but 2014 has already become the year with most robberies in São Paulo State over the past 13 years.
286,523 cases were registered between January and November; a record since 2001, when the government adopted the current methodology.
The official statistics released by the government on Wednesday (24) revealed that 2014 will also make history for having the biggest amount of robberies in a month of November (23,507).
It was the 18th consecutive monthly increase of this type of crime across the State and in the capital.
EXPLANATION
Folha contacted Geraldo Alckmin's (PSDB) administration, but they did not comment on the figures. Their usual explanation is the increase of robberies may be motivated by the online registers, option available since 2013.
However, they admit it explains only part of the problem.
Violent robberies or with serious threats are the crimes to bring the biggest feeling of insecurity in the population.
Armed robberies that end in the death of the victim are also on the list.
Experts say the incidence of this type of crime is one of the main thermometers of police efficiency. The better the patrolling, the lesser chances of success a criminal will have.
According to the Secretariat of Public Security in Sao Paulo, only 2% of robberies are solved.
