LEANDRO MACHADO
FROM SÃO PAULO
On November 9th, the bodies of five youth from Parque São Rafael, who died in a massacre, were identified at the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
That same day, in the same neighborhood on São Paulos' far east side where the youth resided, a thief broke into a daycare center and threatened the teachers; exchanging bullets with police officers in front of four year old children.
The Maria Aparecida do Nascimento daycare center was 10 minutes shy of closing time. Employees were administering the last snack of the day. Outside, mothers waited for the 4 pm bell to pick up their children.
Nearby, a youth stole a motorcycle. He was seen by military police. The pursuit began. The boy made his way through one of the daycare doors. He tried to escape. Military Police entered. A shootout took place on the stairs.
The exchange of bullets in front of children appears to be a symbol of everyday life at Parque São Rafael, one of the poorest and most problematic districts in the city.
On the streets, the feeling is that something grim is always about to take place.
