Unpopular, Dunga is Brazil's New Coach

BERNARDO ITRI
SPECIAL ENVOY TO RIO

Coach of the Brazilian national team between 2006 and 2010, the former player Dunga, 50, was brought back to be the captain of the national team for the next four years, to focus on the 2018 World Cup, in Russia.

After Scolari's failure at the World Cup, Dunga's name did not emerge among the favorites for the position. After his appointment, polls indicated that more than 70% of fans disapproved CBF's choice. On his return, the new coach, reported that he intends to change the rejection to his name.

Dunga's lack of popularity can be explained by the elimination of the national team, then commanded by him, in the quarter finals game in the 2010 World Cup as well as the Brazilian preference, expressed in Datafolha's poll, to coaches who had never trained the national team.

"I very much believe in the Brazilian fan. My goal is to change the way people think about me," Dunga said.

"Nelson Mandela had everything against hm and managed to change the way people thought of him with patience. Hopefully I can have 1% of his patience," he said, poining out he does not feel the rejection daily.

Dunga showed clear differences in relation to Scolari talk, the former Brazilian coach, and Parreira, the former supervisor of the national team, who claimed Brazil would win the 2014 World Cup.

He said he would not want to delude fans on results.

"I will not sell a dream, I'll sell reality. The reality is that we need to work. We can't tell fans we are the best. We can't think we will win before the World Cup happens," he said.
