COLLABORATION FOR FOLHA
Virtually unknown when he defeated Anderson Silva, American Chris Weidman beat Rio's Vitor Belfort this Sunday (24th) and now the UFC sees him, even if unintentionally, as the "executioner of Brazilians."
Of his 13 wins in 13 fights, along with Belfort, he beat the "Spider" twice, Lyoto Machida, Demian Maia and Valdir Araújo.
For the Brazilian market, a victory for Belfort would have been better, as he is well known and charismatic. Now, the only bet left to make is on the fight between Brazilian lightweight champion José Aldo and loudmouth Irishman Connor McGregor, on July 11.
In other words, he has become the person who catches the attention of the public that doesn't usually follow the sport, a UFC leader confided to Folha.
Experts see José Aldo as the best in MMA today, but he doesn't have the popularity that Anderson Silva had or that Belfort could have if he became champion.
