The involvement with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) coincides with an unpublished period of economic prosperity for its president, Marco Polo Del Nero.
Since his colleague Jose Maria Marin assumed the confederation presidency in March 2012, the manager has reported real estate asset development of at least 175%, according to a Folha survey that looked at properties registered in his name in the State of São Paulo and the city of Rio.
During the last three years, Del Nero acquired two luxury properties in Rio and another in São Paulo.
The disbursement registered in documents from the Notary's Office, listed US$1.8 million (R$5.7 million) in values adjusted for inflation, with one son's shareholding and benefits payable already discounted.
Since the purchase of the first property in June 2012, Del Nero has spent an average of US$51,000 (R$158,000) monthly on properties.
When Ricardo Teixeira resigned in March 2012, Del Nero became Marin's righthand man. In April of the same year, they participated in a meeting with the president of Fifa, Joseph Blatter. Two months later, in June, Del Nero officially became vice-president of the CBF.
Formally, the office of vice-president only earned Del Nero a US$3200 (R$10.000) increase in monthly salary. Del Nero still holds executive positions with Fifa and Conmebol, in addition to his role as partner at a law firm. Income received from those activities is unknown.
An investigation by the FBI (federal american police) indicates that Marin split kickbacks linked to "Copa do Brasil" broadcasting rights.
Del Nero appears in the investigation under the code name "coconspirador 12", described by the US Justice Department as a top player with a high office in Conmebol, the CBF and Fifa.
Del Nero is the only one who fits the described profile, but he denies involvement in the scheme.
When questioned about the evolution of his wealth, CBF president Marco Polo del Nero merely said that he is in good standing with the IRS.
