At the end of the second half, coach Joachim Löw called the reserve Mario Götze and was direct.
"Show the world that you're better than Messi," the coach said, commenting on the directions he had given to the midfielder, who scored the goal.
The player of Bayern Munich came in as a sub for Klose after 43 minutes of the second half and managed to end the 24-year fast without winning the World Cup.
After 7 min of the second half of extra time, he received a cross pass from Schürrle and had to dominate the ball at speed, and kick hard, without defense for goalkeeper Romero.
"Götze is a prodigy who has such immense capabilities, this exceptional skill. He can always decide a game and scored a goal tonight", said the coach who had the player on the bench in the final three games of the World Cup.
The heroe of Germany's title, the midfielder could not explain how he scored the goal that got the party started at Maracană.
"In reality, it is an indescribable feeling. You kick towards the goal and do not know what is happening. I can not describe it. It's a dream come true for us", said Götze, 22.
One of the most celebrated by the German fans, the Bayern Munich player was on the field for just over 33 minutes, passing 11 times and with two kicks at goal in the final at Maracană. He had scored just one goal in the tournament.
Born in 1992, Götze is one of the biggest developments of local football. Last year, the Munich club paid around R$110 million (US$50 million) to Borussia Dortmund. He was the first signing by coach Pep Guardiola.
The transfer was one of the most controversial in the country. He was traded when both teams were preparing to decide the Champions League, Europe's main event.
"The World Cup was not an easy tournament. I'm very happy, I'm very proud of the national squad and what happened here."
