FROM RIO DE JANEIRO
On Wednesday, September 20, Judge Marcelo Bretas sentenced the former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral (PMDB), to 45 years and two months in prison for passive corruption, money laundering and leading a criminal organization.
Cabral's sentence was an outcome of the Calicute operation, an unfolding of the Lava Jato operation in Rio - it is the biggest case connected to the scandal.
The decision refers to the case of bribes paid by construction company Andrade Gutierrez for construction carried out in the state of Rio, money laundering by purchasing jewelry and through the law firm of the former first lady, Adriana Ancelmo.
Judge Bretas also sentenced Cabral's wife to 18 years and three months in prison on the grounds of money laundering through the purchasing of jewelry, as well as a nonexistent contract signed between her law firm and two companies.
Bretas ordered the former governor and his wife to serve their sentences in prison without parole. Cabral is already in prison while Ancelmo is in house arrest.
JEWELRY
This is the second time that Cabral is convicted in the Lava Jato operaton. He had been sentenced to 14 years and two months in prison by Judge Sergio Moro for bribes paid by Andrade Gutierrez in the construction of the refinery project Comperj. In this first case, Ancelmo was found not guilty.
This is the first sentence given by Judge Bretas in cases against the former governor of Rio. Bretas is responsible for 12 other penal cases against Cabral.
