FROM SÃO PAULO
On Tuesday pilgrims attending the 28th World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro began to use portable confessionals located in several parts of the city.
Some 100 cabins were made available for Catholics to confess in different languages, indentified with small signs in front. The confessionals were designed by Spanish architect Ignacio de Ozono, a resident in Brazil for 38 years.
The project is inspired by the view of the Corcovado statue from the Gávea neighborhood.
The portable cabins are likely to be used by Pope Francis on Friday, when the confession of five youths of different nationalities is scheduled. The World Youth Day began officially on Tuesday (23) and will end on Sunday (28).
The opening ceremony was held in Copacabana. Pope Francis preferred to rest on Tuesday after his tumultuous arrival in Brazil on Monday afternoon. He spent the day at the archdiocese's Residência Assumpção in Sumaré, participating in few activities and holding private masses with cardinals.
