FROM RIO
The ex-governor of Rio, Sérgio Cabral (PMDB Party) and his wife, lawyer Adriana Ancelmo, were the subjects of a new charge by the Rio Federal Public Prosecutor (MPF). It is the 11th charge against the PMDB Leader.
The charge is related to the purchase of more than R$ 4 million (US$ 1,2 million) detailed by jeweler H. Stern in leniency testimony before the Judiciary. The existence of more jewelry that was previously known was revealed to Folha two weeks ago.
The MPF declared in the filing that the acquisition of the jewelry was for the "purpose of converting the money received as a kickback into a licit asset and to also conceal the real owner of the asset".
In addition to Cabral and Ancelmo, Carlos Emanuel Miranda and Luiz Carlos Bezerra, both listed as the scheme's financial operators, were also charged.
Adriana Ancelmo's defense said that H. Stern has lied on other occasions when it attributed the jewelry to the former first lady. Cabral's lawyers have previously said that they will only make statements at court hearings in the case.
