FROM SÃO PAULO
The Brazilian population has slightly surpassed 207 million inhabitants, according to a new estimate released on Wednesday (the 30th) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (known by its Portuguese acronym as IBGE).
The updated number is 207,660,929 inhabitants, an increase of 0.77% over the 206,081,432 from last year.
In the state rankings, three of the most populous states are in the Southeastern region, while five of the least populous are in the North.
The leader is São Paulo, with 45.1 million inhabitants, accounting for 21.7% of the total population of the country. Roraima is the least populous state, with only 522.6 thousand inhabitants (0.3% of the total population).
The São Paulo Capital city is also at the top of the rankings as the city with the largest population: 12.1 million people.
The population count is used for, among other things, calculating quotas from the States and Municipalities Participation Fund.
