SÃO PAULO

Casa da Ópera, Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais)

Inaugurated in 1770, the Casa da Ópera is the oldest working opera house in the continent. Guided tours are not available. The opera house is open from 12pm to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays, and 12pm to 4pm on Saturdays. Admission fee: R$ 4.

Teatro Amazonas, Manaus (Amazonas)

Completed in 1896, the theater was financed with profits from the rubber boom. The curtains, which were painted by Crispim de Amaral, represent the Meeting of Waters. Guided tours occur on a daily basis and take approximately 45 minutes. Admission fee: R$ 20.

José de Alencar, Fortaleza (Ceará)

The theater has stained glass windows that were inspired by the art nouveau style, prevalent around the time of its inauguration in 1910. Guided tours are available from 9am to 5pm (Tuesdays to Fridays) and from 2pm to 5pm (Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays). Admission fee: R$ 6.

Free guided tours take place at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm (Wednesdays to Fridays) and from 1pm to 3pm on Saturdays. Established in 1911, the Theatro Municipal hosted the Modern Art Week of 1922.

Santa Isabel, Recife (Pernambuco)

Completed in 1850, the theater was built in honor of Princess Isabel and was not built by slaves. Guests may do guided tours on Tuesdays at 3pm after scheduling them via email (teatrodesantaisabel.educativo@gmail.com), and on Sundays, at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.

The Teatro da Paz was also financed with profits from the rubber boom. It was inaugurated in 1878 and features neoclassical decoration. Guided tours are available from 9am to 5pm (Tuesdays to Fridays); 9am to 12pm (Saturdays); 9am to 11am (Sundays). Admission fee: R$ 6.
