German players showed solidarity and tried to comfort the Brazilians after the 7-1 rout at Mineirão, on Tuesday (8).
On social networks and in interviews after the match, they said to be grateful for the Brazilian hospitality. They praised the opponent and asked respect for the defeated team.
"Respect the yellow jersey with its history and tradition. The world of soccer owes a lot to Brazilian soccer, which is and will always be the land of soccer", said a message written in Portuguese, posted by the midfielder Lukas Podolski. We all grew up watching Brazil play; our heroes, who inspired us, are all from here."
"I'm quite sad with what happened with Brazil. It's a good team that has done a great job. I'm sad for Neymar and Thiago Silva, who could not play against us", said Schweinsteiger, who plays alongside Dante in Bayern Munich, to SporTV after the game.
The attacker Thomas Müller, also a Bayern player, who scored one of the goals, said Brazil didn't deserve to be thrashed at home.
"Brazilian players are all playmakers, with excellent skills. They didn't deserve it in their own country, in their own stadium and with their fans. I think of my friends who play for Bayern, as Luiz Gustavo, and they didn't deserve the 7-1 defeat. They played a good World Cup", said the German striker.
A similar message, also in Portuguese, was posted on the official Germany national team Facebook page. It regarded the 2006 World Cup semifinal when Germany was eliminated by Italy at home.
"Dear Brazilians. First of all, we would like to thank you for the affection that we are receiving by all persons throughout our stay in Brazil. Other than that, since 2006 we know how painful it is to lose a semifinal in our own country", he said.
Accommodated in Bahia, the German team has been one of the nicest groups since their arrival.
Among other episodes, the players were filmed singing the anthem of Bahia, taking pictures with the jerseys of local clubs on and dancing with Pataxó natives. Moreover, they often declared their love for the country.
