Five Trips That President Dilma Missed in Alagoas

ROBERTO DE OLIVEIRA
IN ALAGOAS
Dilma missed out on the sun, the salt and the sea of Maceio when passing through the capital of Alagoas last week.
"Next time you come back, make sure you pack your bikini," said state governor Teotonio Vilela Filho (PSDB party).
Dilma, the land of writer Graciliano Ramos certainly deserves a visit, like the ones you used to make to Bahia over New Years.
In Maceio, the president can choose between the main beaches of Pajuçara and Jatiúca. Just be careful because they are unfit for bathing in some seasons.
If that happens, Dilma can do what most tourists do: a quick trip to visit the neighbouring attractions. Distances are very short.
And if on the next trip the president forgets her bikini again, she shouldn´t let that be an excuse. She can take a walk around the Stella Maris strip mall where the wealthy Maceio women meet. The tour that follows is fit for any president.
COLOUR OF THE SEA
The Brazilian Northeast boasts the widest range of beaches. There is no denying that the colour of the Alagoan sea, light green, emerald green and blue is beyond comparison. It is perfect for snorkeling in its natural pools.
The region offers great diversity in terms of beaches stretching some 140 miles from Sergipe in the South to Pernambuco in the North. The scenery changes at every turn with sandy beaches sculpted by the tides.
CARRO QUEBRADO
Getting to know one of the most breathtaking and quietest beaches in Alagoas will take some effort. Carro Quebrado beach (literally Broken Car) is in Barra de Santo Antonio, a fishing village 40km from Maceio.
It can only be reached after a boat crossing, driving along a dirt road and crossing a mangrove until a white sandy bank which looks like an oasis. Don´t be lazy! The cliff views over the beaches of Croa Island and Carro Quebrado will make up for it.
FOZ DO SÃO FRANCISCO
If you don´t have a car, don´t worry! Agencies pick tourists up at their hotels and take them to Piaçabuçu, 90 miles from the capital. Make the most of it to get to know Penedo, on the riverbank.
Founded in the 16th century, it is the first township in Alagoas. That is where, on the banks of the Chico, the boats leave for Foz which includes pit stops for bathing in natural pools.
S. MIGUEL DOS MILAGRES
It´s the beach of the moment. One of the trendiest strongholds of pousadas (or guesthouses) in the Northeast that offers a wide range of gastronomical offerings.
Visitors to this small fishing village will encounter a different beach with every step. Green, warm and calm waters. At low tide, you can walk for miles in shallow water.
PRAIA DO PATACHO
Patacho is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Alagoan coast. Palm trees frame the sand where it meets the green coloured sea. Or is it turquoise blue? And what is even better, it is almost always ignored by the mass of tourists.
Patacho and Laje in the town of Porto de Pedras are two of the charming beaches on the Ecological Route in the North of the State of Alagoas. Sea, coconut water, beer, seafood, fish and more sea. Both beaches also have excellent accommodation options.
