Raynéia Gabrielle Lima, 31, a medical school student, was shot to death on Monday night (the 23rd) in Managua in the midst of a social upheaval that has emerged in the country ruled by Daniel Ortega. The murder of the Brazilian student, which was reported by the local media early Tuesday, was later confirmed by the Brazilian embassy in Nicaragua.

On Tuesday (the 24th), the Brazilian government summoned Nicaraguan ambassador, Lorena Martínez, to clarify the murder. The diplomat attended a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Relations, but Brazil is still awaiting further details from Managua.

In a move demonstrating that tensions between the two countries are running high, Itamaraty - Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Relations - also summoned the Brazilian ambassador stationed in Nicaragua, Luís Cláudio Villafañe, to clarify the event - however, there is still no indication of when he will arrive.

Raynéia was from Vitória de Santo Antão, in the state of Pernambuco and would have turned 32 in August. The following description can be found on a social media profile of hers: "Born in Brazil, reborn in Nicaragua. Freedom, clarity, peace and love."

According to Ernesto Medina, the dean at UAM, Ms. Lima was shot at around 11:00 pm (or 2:00 am Brasília time), when she was returning home. She was by herself in her car, but her boyfriend was in a separate vehicle behind her.

Raynéia's father, driver Ridevando Lima, said that she had moved to Nicaragua six years ago along with her husband, who belonged to a Brazilian family that had resided in the country at one point.
