Prefixos, sufixos e a leitura de textos

O domínio da leitura nos exames vestibulares tem sido cada
vez mais exigido. Abordando
vários temas, os textos escolhidos -alguns com vocabulário
bastante complexo- podem
parecer, à primeira vista, quase
indecifráveis.
A leitura é uma atividade dinâmica na qual o leitor participa ativamente do processo de
construção do significado de
um texto. Ele interage , formula
hipóteses, faz questionamentos, usa seu conhecimento prévio e seus valores culturais para
negociar significados, "briga"
com o texto para conseguir sua
compreensão.
Uma das armas para brigar
com o texto é conhecer sufixos
e prefixos.
Formadores de palavras, eles
podem ajudar o leitor a descobrir a classe gramatical de um
vocábulo, e, por vezes, deduzir
o que o mesmo significa.
Vejamos o exemplo a seguir
onde são acrescentados um
prefixo e um sufixo à palavra
"place":
RE + PLACE + ABLE =
REPLACEABLE
A seguir, uma questão da prova da Fundação Getulio Vargas de 2007:
The United States is a
nation of immigrants.
Those who chose to pull up
stakes and try their luck in
a distant land "have
energy and are willing to
take risks," says
psychologist John Gartner
of Johns Hopkins
University. For most
immigrants, that
translates into a spark and
drive that lead them to
success in their adopted
land. For a few, however,
risk-taking coupled with
impulsivity may set the
stage for violence, Gartner
says, "and you do see
more violence in
immigrant nations like
Australia and America". If
barriers of language or
culture keep an
immigrant child from
fitting in, it can increase
the risk that he will
become alienated and,
given enough triggers,
resort to violence.
Besides murder and
violence are also higher in
nations with the largest
income inequality. The
United States ranks high
on this problematic
measure. Perhaps it was
no coincidence that Cho,
murderer of more than 30
people at Virginia Tech,
railed that "your golden
necklaces weren't
enough, you snobs. Your
trust fund wasn't
enough".

In paragraph 2, we apprehend
that
A) the poor are more likely
to commit crimes.
B) income inequality tends
to undermine murder and
violence.
C) poverty is the deterministic cause of violence.
D) every American citizen
has a high income.
E) Cho seemed to blame the
wealthy for his behavior.
Na questão do vestibular da
FGV, saber que "under" é prefixo de decréscimo ou diminuição evita que o leitor seja
induzido ao erro. Traduzindo
a alternativa B temos "a desigualdade na distribuição de
renda tende a minar os assassinatos e a violência". Neste
caso, devido ao prefixo "under" minar indica diminuir,
abalar, o que elimina a possibilidade da escolha dessa alternativa como a correta.
A resposta correta é a alternativa E. Mais uma vez, conhecer o sufixo auxilia o candidato em sua escolha: O
substantivo "wealth" (riqueza), acrescido do sufixo "y" e
acompanhado do artigo definido "the", transforma-se em
"os ricos", grupo ao qual Cho
se refere nas frases "your golden necklaces weren't
enough, you snobs. Your trust
fund wasn't enough".
