Economic Minister Raises Duty-Free Shop Purchase Limit to US$ 1,000

New value starts from January 1, 2020

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, signed an ordinance on Monday (14) that raises the limit of purchases in duty-free shops from US$ 500 to US$ 1,000. The new value for purchases from foreign airports through the country's airports starts January 1, 2020.

President Jair Bolsonaro posted on Facebook a photo of the minister as he signed the document.

Bolsonaro announced the change on Thursday (10), but he did not have the measure ready, and there was no budget for implementation, according to the economic team.

For purchases made abroad and brought to Brazil in luggage, the current limit of US $ 500 will be maintained. This is because a Mercosur norm that dictates the rule for all countries in the bloc cannot be disrespected.

The government also increased from US$ 300 to US$ 500 the free-trade quota for land-based free-shops, in which case Paraguay falls.
