Government Excludes People over 55 Years Old from Employment Program

Project reduces taxes for company that hires 18 to 29 year olds

Brasília

President Jair Bolsonaro signed on Monday (11) a provisional measure creating the Green and Yellow Employment program, which reduces taxes for companies that hire young people from 18 to 29 years in their first jobs.

The government removed from the project the proposal that would have given the same benefits for hiring people over 55 years. They have been excluded from the proposal and will not be entitled to participate in the program.

On Tuesday (5), the Presidency spokesman, General Otávio Rêgo Barros, confirmed the participation of workers of this age group in the program.

"One of the goals is to reduce the cost of hiring young people between 18 and 29 and people over 55 who are not retired," he said at the time.

According to the special secretary of Social Security and Labor, Rogério Marinho, the government has considered the tax issue to limit the program to young people. He justified it as a pilot project that could be expanded.

"We had to make a choice, our idea was to reach people over 55, but ... we opted for this group of young people, which is fragile and has a higher unemployment rate."
