Bolsonaro's Popularity Takes a Hit with Covid-19 Crisis, Says Datafolha

Rejection rises to 40% and approval drops to 31% amid vaccination failures

São Paulo

With the management of the Covid-19 pandemic worsening, disapproval of Jair Bolsonaro's government has once again surpassed his approval. According to Datafolha, the president is rated as bad or very bad by 40%, compared to 32% in early December.

Those who rate it as excellent or good dropped from 37% to 31% in the new survey, where2,030 people were contacted by phone across Brazil on January 20 and 21.

This is the largest nominal drop since the beginning of Bolsonaro's term.

The improvement in Bolsonaro's approval in the second half of 2020, driven by emergency aid and policies for the Northeast, has been shaken since December, especially after failures in the vaccination campaign.

People who fear getting the coronavirus are among the most unhappy with the president. Forthose who say they are very afraid of the disease, rejection jumped from 41% to 51%.

For half of Brazilians, according to the survey, Bolsonaro does not have the capacity to lead the country.
