11-Year-Old Raped and Pregnant again after Abortion Denied

The child is in the third month of pregnancy and was the victim of another relative, says family

One year after giving birth after being raped and being denied the right to an abortion, an 11-year-old girl living in rural Teresina ( Piaui) was again a victim of sexual violence and is pregnant for the second time.

The exam carried out this Friday (9) at the Service for Assistance to Women Victims of Violence, at the Maternity Dona Evangelina Rosa, in Teresina, found that the girl is three months pregnant.

She was ten years old when she became pregnant after being raped in a bush by a 25-year-old cousin in January 2021.

The girl carried the pregnancy to term and gave birth in September of the same year. Her mother, a 29-year-old housewife, did not authorize her daughter's abortion. Brazilian law allows abortion in cases of rape and risk of death for the pregnant woman, and a court decision extended the approval to cases of fetal anencephaly.

The girl also decided not to have an abortion. The cousin who raped her was murdered shortly afterward for reasons the family alleges not being aware of.

About a month ago, she started living in a shelter in Teresina and local educators suspected that she was pregnant again. The girl's mother told Folha that she only learned a week ago that the girl had been raped by an uncle.
