Datafolha: Democracy Support Hits Record in Brazil Close to Runoff

Institute shows that 79% support democracy and 5% defend dictatorship in some circumstances

São Paulo

The support of the Brazilian population for democracy reached a record 79% 10 days into the runoff election between Lula (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL). It is the highest rate recorded by Datafolha since the beginning of the historical series, in 1989. Support for the dictatorship, on the other hand, is the lowest ever recorded.

According to the institute, 5% responded that, in certain circumstances, a dictatorship is better than a democratic regime. Another 11% declare to be fine with either one.

Previous records, when the rate of those who declare that democracy is always the best form of government reached 75%, were recorded in June 2020 and August 2022.
