PT Members Fear Violence May Increase Voter Abstention

Lula's campaign guidelines call for reinforcement of the incentive for voter turnout

A chain of command of former president Lula's (PT) campaign fears that recent attacks on supporters may cause abstentions on October 2nd.

For PT members, there has been an attempt to intimidate Lula's voters, with the threat of tension in the streets on polling day. The campaign leadership faces a dilemma on how to deal with possible voter fear.

While one wing defends that the matter must be addressed in messages directed at voters, preferably by Lula himself, the other claims that the simple approach could scare away undecided voters and even sympathizers of the former president.

With the dilemma, the guideline is for now to intensify the anti-abstention campaign, but without addressing the risk of violence on Sunday.

Turnout is treated by the PT as a fundamental factor in the attempt to guarantee Lula's victory in the first round of the presidential election.
