Lula's Inauguration Ends with No Major Incidents Despite Security Fears

One person was detained, and four drones were shot down by the Federal Police at the Esplanada dos Ministérios

Surrounded by the fears of the transition team and security forces, the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) took place this Sunday (1st) without significant risks or threats of violence against the PT member or his supporters at the Esplanada dos Ministérios ( Esplanade of ministries).

According to the Public Security Department of the Federal District, only one person was detained after being caught by the police, during a search, with a knife and carrying fireworks.

The latest balance released by the cabinet also highlighted that, in the morning, the Military Police of the Federal District answered a suspected bomb threat in one of the subway stations in the central area of Brasília. That and three other similar cases were discarded along the day.

The Federal Police also shot down four drones that flew over the Esplanada dos Ministérios during the inauguration ceremony. The devices were not registered by the transition team. Corporation agents rely on anti-drone weapons to help secure the inauguration.

Without major risks to the inauguration, Lula decided to maintain the traditional car parade in the presidential Rolls-Royce. The car had the top down and, as it leaves the president exposed throughout the journey, its use was reassessed during the week before the presidential inauguration. Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and their wives, Rosângela da Silva, Janja, and Lu Alckmin, made the journey in the back seat of the same vehicle.

The president even contradicted the recommendations of his personal security, made by the Federal Police, and did not wear a bulletproof vest under his suit.

The main problem, according to people present at the Esplanada, was the intense heat and the logistical difficulties in accessing the Praça dos Três Poderes ( where the ceremony took place).

The Planning team foresaw that all people would be searched at the entrance, but Folha caught breaks in blockades and Lula supporters who got in without being approached by the police.

Early in the morning, GSI (Institutional Security Office) agents managed to install metal detectors at the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
