The mayor of Araucária (PR), Hissam Hussein Dehaini, 65, got married this month to a 16-year-old teenager and, in the same week, promoted his mother-in-law to the position of municipal secretary of Culture and Tourism.
Hissam is in his second term as mayor of the city, which is located in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, and he is also a businessman. The teenage wife is a student. Marrying a minor who is 16 or 17 years old is allowed by Brazilian law as long as there is parental consent.
The teenager's mother became Secretary of Culture and Tourism on the 14th. Two days earlier, on April 12, the Official Journal of the Civil Registry Offices of Brazil published the act informing that the couple had presented the documents for the wedding (announcement of proclamations).
