Brazil Breaks New Record and Records 133 New Deaths from Coronavirus; Total Is 800

Country has almost 16 thousand confirmed cases of Covid-19, but real number tends to be higher due to underreporting

At least 800 people have died from the new coronavirus in Brazil, according to data from the Ministry of Health released on Wednesday (8). Approximately 133 new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, up 20%.

The country has 15,927 confirmed cases of the disease. The day before, there were 13,717 - the increase was 16%.

The ministry, however, has reported that the actual number of cases tends to be higher, since only severe cases of patients admitted to hospitals are tested, and there are many cases still waiting for confirmation.

Folha's reporting showed that primary care teams in several cities and states state that underreporting to the Ministry of Health of suspected cases has been gigantic. They also say that, without a specific ordinance from the ministry, doctors have been guided by local technical notes with different orientations.

São Paulo, the most populous state, remains the most affected by the new coronavirus: there are 6,708 cases and 428 deaths.

Then, Rio de Janeiro appears, with 1,938 cases and 106 deaths. Ceará records 1,291 cases and 43 deaths. Tocantins is the only state with no coronavirus deaths.

Mandetta said he was concerned about the possible easing of restrictions in large cities. He pointed out that, despite the increase in the number of victims, about 85% of those infected can recuperate.

The ministry of health has recorded 34,905 hospitalizations for acute respiratory syndrome, which represents an increase of 277% in relation to the same period of 2019.
