Brazil Has 1,185 New Deaths this Tuesday, Reveals a Consortium of Press Vehicles; Total Passes 38 Thousand

This Tuesday (9), Brazil registered 1,185 new deaths by Covid-19 and 31,197 new cases. Brazil has recorded 38,497 deaths and 742,084 sick people since February 26, when the disease was first diagnosed in the country.

The data are the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the news media O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, Folha, O Globo, G1, and UOL to gather and report figures on the new coronavirus.

São Paulo had a record number of deaths in a single day: 334. Nine thousand five hundred twenty-two paulistas have already died from the new coronavirus, more than 5,000 of them in the capital, where street commerce is due to reopen this Wednesday (10). In the last 24 hours, 5,545 cases were confirmed in the state, and the total exceeds 150 thousand.

The vehicle consortium initiative is a response to the Jair Bolsonaro government, which threatened to withhold data, delayed bulletins, withdrew information from the air, failed to disclose case and death totals, and released conflicting data.

According to a bulletin from the Ministry of Health also this Tuesday, 1,272 new deaths and 32,091 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, totaling 38,406 deaths and 739,503 infected people.

Brazil is the second country in the world in the number of cases, behind only the USA. It occupies the third position in total number of deaths.
