New Coronavirus Subvariant Identified in São Paulo

Discovery had not yet been cataloged on a platform that gathers genomic data from the Sars-CoV-2 virus

The identification of a new subvariant of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid, was confirmed this Wednesday (27) in the city of São Paulo. According to the Dasa laboratory network, the discovery comes from the sample of a three-year-old child. The material was collected on February 16, 2022 for an RT-PCR exam. According to the laboratory, subvariant comes from two other already detected subvariants of the omicron — BA.1 and BA.2.

The laboratory claims that the subline had not yet been identified globally and was not cataloged on Gisaid. This platform consolidates genomic data on the virus from more than 70 countries. Registration on the platform has already been arranged, according to Dasa.
