Olimpiada Rio 2016

Security Increased by 670% during Games Compared to Normal Days

The security presence in Olympic areas and expressways in Rio will have a contingent composed of seven times the number of men deployed by the Military Police in normal circumstances.

The multiplication of active personnel is possible due to reinforcements from Armed Forces on public security alert, from the National Security Force and due to extra payment made on Wednesday (6th) to civil and military police (PM) - the State increased the contingent of PMs in the streets by paying officers to work on their days off.

In the four regions where competition will take place, the Rio PM currently have an effective presence available of 6.447 police - the number of the contingent in battalions that normally work in these regions.

Starting on the 24th of this month, when all of the effective event security personnel become available, 49.845 officers and agents will be present and visible in streets or arenas where visitors and the so called "Olympic family" (athletes, press, leaders, delegations, etc.) are present

USUAL TACTIC
The number of security officers and agents deployed in the streets repeats a formula in use since Rio-92, a climate summit attended by heads of state. At that time, a large contingent of police and military forces was deployed to inhibit any criminal activity in locales or points close to the events. The same thing was done during the Pan-American Games in 2007.

Unable to bring all 9.600 men from the National Force (only 6.000 were brought, including 1.000 PMs from the State of São Paulo), security coordinators for the Games decided to bring an additional 3.000 military forces to Rio

Now, instead of 18 thousand, 21.845 forces will be deployed in the city. According to Jungmann, this increase was the result of a request from Rio's interim Governor, Francisco Dornelles (PP).

In addition to occupying strategic structures, military forces will be deployed on expressways that access competition locales, as well as train/metro stations.

"With regard to public safety, foreigners can come to Rio with complete peace of mind", affirmed Alexandre de Moraes, Minister of Justice and Citizenship.
