Rio-2016 Will Appeal Decision Permitting Protests in Arenas

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) and the Rio-2016 Organizing Committee said that they would appeal the decision from the Courts allowing political manifestations during the Olympics.

On Monday, the 8th, a Federal Judge granted an injunction liberating peaceful political manifestations during Olympic trials.

The decision by the Federal Judge was made after fans were removed from arenas for displaying "Out With Temer" posters.

Last Saturday (the 6th), Military Police in Minas Gerais removed 12 fans from seats at the Minerão stadium during a match between the United States and France for the women's soccer championship due to a political protest against interim President Michel Temer.

During the Olympic opening ceremony, Temer tried, but failed to escape from booing by spectators. The event organizers tried to spare the interim president from mocking.

His name wasn't announced at any time during the ceremony - even though it was included in the official script. Even so, he didn't escape from being booed when he declared the Games to be open.

Olympic norms and internal competition rules veto any kind of political or religious intervention at sporting facilities. Last Monday, the Rio-2016 Committee declared its support for the decision by the Military Police at the Minerão.

Right after the Rio-2016 Committee's declaration, a volunteer decided to quit the Olympics in protest against the position of the International Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee against allowing political manifestations in the sporting arenas.

The Committees have stated that they will respect the decision of the Court while they seek to have it overturned.

"We are reviewing today's decision with the injunction that reconsiders the demonstrations to be legal. We have asked the Judge to reconsider the case. In the meantime, we will respect the decision. The injunction is in vigor and we will abide by it", said Mário Andrada, Communication Director for Rio-2016.

"We simply believe that sports facilities are not the place for political and religious manifestations. And we remind everyone that the rules at the World Cup were exactly the same", he concluded.
