Backpack Is Detonated by Bomb Squad at Olympic Park

A backpack found inside the Carioca Arena 1 which is holding basketball games alerted the Anti-Bomb Group of the Federal Police in the early evening on Thursday (the 11th).

Suspicion that it could contain a bomb led agents to blow the backpack up.

The incident delayed the entry of spectators who were there to watch the match between Spain and Nigeria, Group B, scheduled to begin at 7 pm.

This was the first time that the group responded to a call inside of the Olympic Park. Nine Fire and Rescue vehicles responded and arrived at the scene.

As of August the 7th, Federal and Civil Police had received 47 bomb threats in different parts of Rio. All have been false.

This is an average of three false alarms per day only in the capital. Normally the police don't get even 2 of these types of calls per month in the entire state.

Fear of terror attacks in the city during the Games has led concession employees and military police to undergo training administered by the Federal Police and even security agents from the United States.
