Hook Up Apps Popular Among Athletes at Olympic Village

Since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, rumor has spread that hooking up is big among athletes in Olympic Villages.

In Barcelona, the athletes exhausted the stock of 80,000 condoms distributed by the organization. In Rio, that number has reached 450,000.

At the 2012 London Games, the goalie for the US soccer team, Hope Solo, said she saw people having sex in public. One Brazilian athlete, who has attended four different Olympics, assured Folha team that there has been some exaggeration.

What we do know is that athletes today have tools that facilitate and encourage hook ups. Folha discovered that there are at least 47 athletes of 21 nationalities with active profiles on hook up apps such as Tinder, Happn and Grindr.

Of the 47 identified, 26 are women and 21 are men. At least three are Olympic medalists.

According to Tinder, the "matches"- when two people express mutual interest- more than doubled in the Olympic Village area when compared to the Rio's average for the year.

There was a 129% increase in the number of daily matches in the city. Making up 5 of the 47 profiles, Canada is the country with the greatest number of athletes who are active on the apps consulted for this report.

The United States and Argentina tied for second place with 4 profiles each. The bronze medal in hook ups is split between Brazil, the Netherlands and Poland, with three profiles each.

Instagram accounts, such as @Sportsswipe, are collecting fotos of athletes who have been spotted on Tinder in the Olympic Village, stadiums, and training centers. Among those captured is the American swim star, Ryan Lochte, who has already publicly confessed to using the app.
