President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday (13th) that he sleeps with a gun next to his bed in his official residence, Palácio da Alvorada.

He made the comment during a breakfast meeting with journalists, which Folha attended.

He said he thinks that the residence is not safe, even with the high-security detail in place. Hence, he can only fall asleep knowing that he can reach out for a gun.  The comment took place before the public school shooting in São Paulo reached the press, also on Wednesday morning. Two shooters killed eight people, including five students.

When asked about what First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro thinks of this habit, the president says she understands it.

Bolsonaro also said that he would send a new bill regarding the right to carry guns. According to him, the law can't be "as strict" as it is now, but he declined to give any other details about the new bill.

In January, he issued a decree regarding gun ownership, with extended deadlines to renew gun registration and new requisites to be presented when someone applies for a gun ownership authorization.
