New Secretary of Culture Faces Loss of Confidence from Government Officials

Regina Duarte faces crisis in the sector

Brasília

Regina Duarte, Brazil's new secretary of culture, has lost the confidence of government officials. With the endorsement of Jair Bolsonaro, the president's allies have started criticizing Regina Duarte to get her to resign from the position of special secretary of culture even before she has completed two months in the post.

Last Tuesday night, at the Alvorada entrance, Bolsonaro criticized the distancing of Regina, who is working from home in São Paulo, and said that the secretary has difficulty handling the portfolio.

Bolsonaro, however, denied that he is dissatisfied with the secretary's work. "Who said that she leaves? Do you believe in the press? I don't believe it," he said when asked about the situation. "I wanted her to be in Brasília to talk to her more. Only that. Nothing more. I am also in love with Brazil's girlfriend."

Members of the government and the cultural sector who supported the choice of the actress for the position also said, on condition of anonymity, that Regina's performance has been disappointing.

The actress took office on March 4, after a long negotiation with TV Globo, which ended a contract of more than five decades.
