The Purchase of Covaxin Becomes Main Target of Pandemic Investigation

Congressman says he alerted the president in March about irregularities, and Planalto asks the PF to investigate whistleblowers

Suspicions involving the purchase of the Indian vaccine Covaxin reached the Palácio do Planalto, with the information that President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) himself was alerted more than three months ago to the signs of irregularities.

The emergence of new facts resulted in a new line of investigation for Covid's CPI, which has become central and is expected to guide the commission's activities for the next few weeks.

The president of the commission, senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), said that it is perhaps the most serious complaint ever received by the collegiate.

Planalto, in turn, reacted late this Wednesday afternoon (23) by calling one of those investigated by the CPI to explain the Covaxin case –Elcio Franco, special advisor to the Chief of Staff and former executive secretary of the Ministry of Health– , but was unable to rebut the axis of suspicion.

Bolsonaro also asked the Federal Police to investigate Health Ministry official Luís Ricardo Miranda and his brother, Federal Deputy Luís Miranda (DEM-DF), authors of the accusations involving him.

Miranda said that calling the federal police is a desperate attempt to silence witnesses about the purchase of the vaccine and shows that Bolsonaro "did nothing" after being alerted about possible irregularities.
