Federal Police Reinforce Forensics Teams and Seek Cause of Death of Bruno and Dom

Different areas of criminal expertise will work together to carry out investigations and issue reports

The plane carrying the human remains found at the sites of the search for indigenous activist Bruno Pereira, 41, and British journalist Dom Phillips, 57, in Amazonas, will land this Thursday (16) in Brasília.

The bodies will be sent to the INC (National Institute of Criminalistics) of the Federal Police, where they will undergo a series of analyses.

The Federal Police is putting together a special scheme to finish all the processes in the shortest possible time, reinforcing the teams that will participate in the task and treating it as a top priority.

Several areas of criminal expertise will work together to carry out investigations and issue reports. The deadline still depends on the sequence of tests that will be necessary, but the goal is to release the remains within seven days for the families.

In addition to confirming that the bodies are indeed those of Bruno and Dom, the experts will also try to unravel the circumstances and causes of the deaths and if any weapons were used in the crime. According to the Federal Police, one of the suspects said that a firearm was used.

This Wednesday (15), the Federal Police announced after ten days of searching that one of those investigated in the case had confessed to participating in the murder of the indigenous activist and the journalist.

According to the Federal Police, it was the fisherman Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, known as Pelado, who told the authorities where he had buried the bodies, as well as where he'd hid the boat in which Bruno and Dom were traveling.

Police are still investigating the motive for the crime.

As reported by Folha, investigators working on the case have privately stated that the leads and evidence to date all reinforce the hypothesis that illegal fishing and hunting activities in the region are the background to the case.

Still, other possibilities are not ruled out, and the scenario is still being classified as unclear.

In addition to the forensics examination that will be carried out on the human remains located, there are also two reports expected to come out soon, but which are now of little relevance to the case.

One of them is about a trace of blood found on Pelado's boat. The other is the analysis of an "apparently human" material found in the region of the Itaquaí river where the two missing men had been seen passing by.

According to people involved in the case, this part has deteriorated and it may not be possible to cross-examine with the genetic material for identification.

However, since one of the suspects has confessed and pointed out the place where he had buried the bodies, it is practically ruled out that this other finding is related to the crime of Bruno and Dom.

The Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, classified the murder as a "cruel crime" and "complete madness".

Since the news of the disappearance, President Jair Bolsonaro has made statements to underrate the issue.

First, he said that the two men were on an unrecommended "adventure". He later claimed that Dom "was frowned upon in the region" because he reported against extractors and that he should have paid more attention "to himself."
