Federal Police Says Telegram Continues without Collaborating with Investigations

Company appointed representatives in Brazil after blockade by the Supreme Court, but Federal says it awaits 'effective answers' to inquiries

Even after appointing a representative in Brazil, Telegram still is not delivering "effective answers" to questions from the Federal Police made within different investigations involving the platform.

The statement was made by Chief of Police Cléo Mazzotti, head of the Federal Police’s Repression of Farm Crimes division, the area where the sector responsible for combating cyber crimes is located. The delegate says that the answers within the investigations are still insufficient.

The application has already been at risk of being banned from the country by decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court. In March, Moraes accepted a request from the federal police and ordered the platform to be blocked. The measure was reversed after the company made commitments on moderation and combating disinformation.

When asking the Supreme Court to block Telegram, the federal police argued that the messaging service has been used as a means of committing serious crimes, such as sharing child pornography.

The app is still seen as one of the main concerns for the 2022 elections due to the risk of spreading fake news.
