São Paulo Cities Ban Street Carnival, but Will Allow it in Clubs and Bars

Only government-funded events were suspended

City halls in the interior and coast of São Paulo have announced in recent days the mass cancellation of carnival activities in 2022 due to fears of a new wave of Covid-19 contagion, even more so with the discovery of the omicron variant. In many of the cities, however, the bans are restricted to the public sphere.

This means that parades of samba schools, musical shows or other activities that involve expenses to the public coffers during Carnival are suspended, but companies, restaurants, bars or clubs interested in offering attractions to revelers will be able to organize events.

More than 50 cities in the interior and along the coast of São Paulo have been announcing the cancellation of carnival celebrations since last week, including cities without cases of coronavirus, not even suspected ones, for many weeks.
