São Paulo Government Says New Year's Eve and Carnival May Be Canceled

Management also warned about the Piracicaba region, which may reach full occupancy of the ICU beds

João Doria's government (PSDB) said on Tuesday (14) that events with large crowds, such as New Year's Eve and Carnival, will depend on the existence of a vaccine against the new coronavirus and the behavior of the pandemic in 2021.

"Events where there is no control over how many people participate, and where there are huge crowds are not in the close view for the contingency center. They are planned, at least, for the blue phase [when the economy will recover], and it is not a situation we have for the next weeks or months," said Paulo Menezes in a press interview at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, in São Paulo.

Menezes stated that the need for planning for this type of mega event is understandable. "But given the situation we have today of the pandemic and the threat of transmission to the population of the state of São Paulo; it is not something that the center considers possible at that time."

Piracicaba registered an increase in the number of cases, and the government stated that it is alert, since the region may reach the total occupancy of the ICU beds.

Until this Tuesday (14), the state had registered 386,607 cases of coronavirus and 18,324 deaths.
