Covid Cases Fall in 80% of Big Cities

October had the lowest rate of cities in acceleration, says Folha monitor

São Paulo

Data from Folha's Covid monitor show that October was the month with the biggest reduction in new cases of the disease and the slowest acceleration in large cities during the pandemic.

In 80% of the 326 municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, there was a decrease. Just 5% of them accelerated in the number of cases.

Among the 27 capitals of the country, 21 spent the entire month in a state of deceleration, including São Paulo, Rio, Recife and Manaus. Only one large city, Valparaíso de Goiás, accelerated in October.

In April, the height of the pandemic, there were 20 locations.

The month also marked the highest number of municipalities in the group without any deaths from the disease (22, or 7%) since May 2020. In the country as a whole, 65% of the 5,570 cities registered no deaths in October.

For experts, the numbers bring optimism and reflect a successful vaccination campaign.
