Covid Pandemic Reduces Learning Throughout Fundamental Education

The biggest drop was in mathematics for the 5th year, points out federal evaluation

The closing of schools during the pandemic caused a drop in the learning quality of students in public and private schools at all stages of fundamental education, according to the results of a federal assessment carried out in 2021.

The most significant drop occurred in mathematics for the 5th year of elementary school, whose score in the Basic Education Development Index went from 227.88 points in 2019 to 216.85 in 2021, returning to the level of 2013.

Based on their performance, 38.9% of the students reached this grade without being able to identify geometric shapes such as a triangle or circles.

In the 9th year, the decrease in quality recorded was smaller, 6.52 points.

Experts recommend caution in the face of indicators, since each network had a different scenario, whether in terms of capacity to offer remote teaching or the possibility of returning to in-person teaching.
