January 8 Coup Attacks Already Have 1,175 Defendants in the Brazilian Supreme Court

The Federal Supreme Court has opened criminal proceedings against other 131 accused by the Office of the Prosecutor General

Brasília

After six rounds of trial in an online assembly that lasted over a month, the STF ( Brazilian Federal Supreme Court) has already turned 1,175 suspects of involvement in the January 8 coup attacks into defendants, with the forecast that the lawsuits, with eventual conviction or acquittal of the accused, proceed in the court itself.

Of this total number, the smallest portion, 225, is accused of being directly involved with the depredation of the Congress, Planalto, and Supreme Court buildings. The rest are part of the inquiry involving the inciters, especially people who camped in front of the Army Headquarters in demonstrations that encouraged the attacks.

The most recent trial session filed lawsuits against 131 accused by the PGR (Office of the Prosecutor General) of inciting the acts.

The expectation is for all cases to be instructed within the scope of the Brazilian Supreme Court itself, and will not be sent to the trial court level, as part of the court environment had initially considered. This has been the intention of the legal-action rapporteur, Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

At this stage of the proceedings, material evidence is presented, such as documents, and witnesses are heard. After that, the justices shall form the conviction whether they will convict or acquit the defendants.
