Research underway at Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) Amazônia shows that the new variant of the novel coronavirus found in Japanese patients originated in the state of Amazonas. The never-before-seen mutations found in the virus have created what will likely be a new Brazilian strain.
According to the scientists, it is still too early to be sure, but the mutations found may mean that this new strain has greater potential for transmission. There are two critical simultaneous mutations in the protein spike that link the virus to cells, making the SARS-CoV-2 virus more contagious.
The data indicate that line B.1.1.28, which is present throughout the country and is the most frequent in Amazonas state, has undergone a series of changes.
