President Jair Bolsonaro spoke of "an excellent future for the Brazil-USA partnership” on the same day of Joe Biden's inauguration as the new leader of the United States. In a letter addressed to the American, he defended the partnership between the two countries "in favor of sustainable development and protection of the environment."
The Brazilian revealed he had sent the document to Biden —with whom he had already exchanged criticisms about the preservation of the Amazon forest - in a sequence of messages published on social media. Bolsonaro also published the full three-page letter.
"Greetings Joe Biden, the 46th President of the USA. The relationship between Brazil and the USA is long, solid and based on strong values, such as the defense of democracy and individual freedom. I remain committed and ready to work for the prosperity of our nations and the well-being of our citizens," he wrote.
The letter represents a change in the stance that Bolsonaro had adopted in the relationship with the United States. The Brazilian president is an outspoken admirer of Donald Trump, the former American president defeated by Biden in last year's elections.
