Detention Center in the US where Brazilian Man Died Piles up Complaints

Department of Homeland Security has called for the removal of detained immigrants pointing to poor location conditions in New Mexico

The detention center where the Brazilian citizen Kesley Vial, who died four months after his detention by immigration agents in the US, was being held accumulates accusations of mistreatment by human rights organizations.

In March, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) even asked for operations on the site to be suspended.

Kesley Vial, 23

Vial, 23, died on August 24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to Rebecca Sheff, a lawyer for the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) who provides assistance to the family, he committed suicide.
Vial had been detained at the end of April by Border Patrol agents in El Paso (Texas) after entering the country irregularly.

In the custody of the official immigration agency, ICE, he was taken to the Torrance County Detention Center (TCDF).
In March, Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph Cuffari released a 19-page alert calling for the removal of all detainees from the TCDF after finding out about a series of problems at the site.

"Torrance is critically understaffed, and that has prevented it from meeting contractual requirements that ensure detainees reside in a safe, secure, and humane environment," the document states.
