Investigations by the Federal Police pointed out that they were victims of a gang that swapped luggage at the São Paulo International Airport, in Guarulhos. A day before the Brazilians boarded, the same tactic was applied to a suitcase that was going to France, according to the Federal Police.

The release was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by Chayane Kuss, the defense lawyer of the Brazilian women in Germany. She stated that the couple has already been reunited with family members who had gone to the country.
