Brazil Has 188 New Deaths from Coronavirus; Confirmed Cases Exceed 30 Thousand

Actual number of people who contracted the virus must be greater because of underreporting

Brazil registered 188 new deaths from the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health released on Thursday (16). So far, there are 1,924 deaths by Covid-19 in the country.

The portfolio's balance also indicates 30,425 confirmed cases of the disease, which represents an increase of 7.4% in comparison with the previous day.

The ministry, however, has reported that the actual number of cases tends to be higher since only patients admitted to hospitals are tested, and some cases are waiting to be confirmed. Folha's report showed that primary care teams in several cities and states say there has been underreporting.

The most affected state is São Paulo, with 11,568 confirmed cases and 853 deaths. Rio de Janeiro appears next, with 3,944 cases and 300 deaths. Pernambuco has 160 deaths and 1,683 cases. The states of Ceará and Amazonas already total 124 deaths each and 2,386 and 1,719 cases, respectively.

All units of the federation have already registered deaths as a result of Covid-19. Tocantins, a state without deaths until then, had its first victim confirmed on Wednesday (15).
